Yes! And it's totally irresponsible.

Fraid so, and it is as Tiger said.
Did anyone hear on the news they are considering putting more trash into space to lower the Sun rays from hitting the earth to combat global warming?
I heard that on one of the news stations last night. Wish I could remember which, but it was not a joke.

Can you imagine if all that trash starts raining down upon us. Gee wiz, what will we do then. Anyone remember skylab? Or if you are too young does anyone remember hearing about it in the distant past?

I remember skylab. But I don't remember any stories of anything happening to it. Want to refresh my memory?
Re: Trashing up space
Skylab started to disintegrate and fell in pieces from the sky over a period of about a week or two.
Most of it fell around New Guinea, in the Ocean. Fortunately I do not think any of it fell on a person, but some of the chunks were fairly large and could have killed had they fallen on someone.
It lost its proper orbit, it had been abandoned. It was on the news for weeks, but that was before the internet..........Geez I am dating myself.

Re: Trashing up space
I remember that as well, Maine. A friend of mine hosted a "Skylab is falling" party.. hoping that a piece of it would fall in his backyard. It didn't of course, but it was a great party anyway.

I'm suddenly reminded of the giant garbage asteroid from Futurama.

You know Mother Earth has been very patient with the fools living here. I am not so sure the rest of the Universe is going to feel the same way.

Re: Trashing up space
The Earth was around for billions of years before we showed up.. and has been through countless global catastrophes .. some of which caused mass extinctions. If we succeed in causing a global catastrophe that causes our own mass extinction, then the Earth will just continue doing what it's always done. Over time, it will repair itself and continue on without giving us a second thought.
The same is true for the universe. Despite what we sometimes think about ourselves, we simply aren't that important.

Re: Trashing up space
Oh I know we are not important. But from the point of view of someone who believes the Universe is alive. I am afraid it might smack us.
And we would deserve it
And we would deserve it

Re: Trashing up space
Religions (not all..) tend to put us humans at the center of the universe. That's rather arrogant if you ask me.
The reality is.. we are living on a small blue dot, circling an average sized star... in an average galaxy. One galaxy among billions and billions (that we know of..). So..if the universe is alive, I doubt it has anything to worry about when it comes to us.

You are right, suddenly I feel very average

Re: Trashing up space
The Total Perspective Vortex is allegedly the most horrible torture device to which a sentient being can be subjected.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starship_Billion_Year_Bunker#Total_Perspective_Vortex
Located on Frogstar World B, the machine was originally invented by one Trin Tragula in order to annoy his wife. Because she was forever nagging him for having no sense of proportion, he decided to invent something that would show her what having a sense of proportion really meant. Unfortunately the shock of being placed in the Vortex destroyed her brain, but Trin Tragula's grief was tempered by the knowledge that he had been right and she had been wrong. In Adams' words, the Total Perspective Vortex illustrated that "In an infinite universe, the one thing sentient life cannot afford to have is a sense of proportion."
When you are put into the Vortex you are given just one momentary glimpse of the entire unimaginable infinity of creation, and somewhere in it a tiny little mark, a microscopic dot on a microscopic dot, which says, "You are here."[5]
