Am I that much of an idiot?
Well, I got asked to open our Freehold a chapter on Facebook. I now have a beachhead for our group in the biggest collection point of special interest groups and whole tribes of cannibal trolls.
Now my spam filter will be screaming in pain, as it daily passes more spam and hate mail than Orson Wells and Oprah combined could swallow.
Am I that much of an idiot?
The price of leadership is doing really stupid things. It was better when they just hanged you and stuck a spear in you, even wicker is probably less painful than Facebook groups.

Facebook is simply weird.
I got onto it at the encouragement of a friend who assured me that I'd "spend just hours and hours there." I haven't. I don't get what thrill there is in reading that an acquaintance decided to get out and de-thatch the lawn today. Another loves to play online games and warbles endlessly about what her latest top scores are.
I can't muster any reason why I need to know or might care about such trivia. It's personal and ought to remain so, largely because few others are the least bit interested in your daily trivia.

Re: Am I that much of an idiot?
I got friended by a lot of my children's friends, of all things, and so I get to hear about what the younger set is up to and see the pictures they post. It's kind of nice that they want to keep me in the loop. But who wants the kids even if they are adults to see your naked soul? Then I was friended by some people at work, so now I have to be careful what I post. And then my writing group friends but sadly all they talk about is their neurosis. It is a quick way to let a wide group know what is going on. That's under my real name - I had to develop a split personality!

Re: Am I that much of an idiot?
It has its real ups and downs. I go through phases where I get into the random applications then walk away for a few months. I have a lot of people as friends on my FB so I have to watch what I say. I've got the Good Christians, some family members, some liberal church members, most of you guys, and so on... while I'm too old to care what people 'think' anymore about certain views, I still have to remember not to say anything incriminating.

I find having heathen content there is a good way for those family and friends who couldn't bring themselves to ask to find out. They can ask, or run away screaming at their leisure without having to ask me directly.

Appoint me as director of special interest studies.
I can ignore them all, and you will never have to worry about it.
I gave up on facebook because one of the things I like is to be able to voice my opinion. I can do that here, but not so much on facebook. To many relatives and friends of relatives, not to mention potential patients on facebook.
I've not touched my profile in weeks, except to shut down every avenue that they offer, and somehow I still manage to get love letters from escorts, and tips on how to make my manhood larger.

Why larger, its hard enough to tuck in as it is.
Besides, I get enough shocks when ex-girlfriends look me up without getting loveletters from the spam-brigades. Ever notice all of them seem to have yahoo accounts or eastern block ones? I expect the cyrillic pirates, but the yahoo spambots are annoying.

Geez, that thing is idiotic!

One of the last ones I got was deceiving. The email goes to my junk box anyway, but this one was from "John at facebook". I actually opened it because I wanted to know why the f you were using the facebook system to contact me. Surely there are better ways open to track me down. Anyway, rest assured, it wasn't from you. Unless you are wanting to teach me new ways to please my woman.
I never put my picture over there, and apparently, I have the same, or a similar name to a guy who plays for some sporting team called the "hornsby spiders". If I got the attention that he was, I don't know if I'd be able to stay married.

Re: Am I that much of an idiot?
I am very very wary of Facebook! I was having a good time, keeping in touch w family & friends (most of you here!), my kids friends also! I was having problems w people that actually live in my town that suddenly wanted to "Friend Request"! DAMN it if I don't see the need to be friends w you in my own home town, why in hell, would I want to be friends w you on the WORLD WIDE WEB??? Whats really hilarious, is just by the names I could tell if they were from DeQuincy or not! I even proved it to JOHN! Most women here, include their maiden name or complete middle names! Thats what happens when there are too many Kayla's, Jennies, & Kathy's! And ALL the talk of JAYSUS! (Can't get away from the guy!) Alright I'll stop!
ANYWAYS...my virus came through Farm Town, cute game, but damn the animals...(they have sheep John T! Cutey's too!)
I went in & blocked all my applications & rarely go there now, except to see the Grandbaby's pics, news from my kids! I still lurk to see whose doing what, I may throw a comment to someone! I won't get fooled again by a "What's happening site." again! F That!

I admit it ... I love Facebook. For years I resisted it and called it 'pointless' Now, hardly a day can go by without me checking the status updates of my friends. I enjoy seeing what everyone is up to....
One of my *friends* in NY is an artist who is doing 100 self portraits in 100 days - today is her 100th day. The evolution was really neat.
In any case.... I love FB.... but I can also laugh at myself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Pebihz0FJA
John, good luck with your group man!

Facebook is where I don't restrict my network. Folks from high school? Check. Relatives of my wife I've never met? Check. Burner peeps? Certainly! Local Pagan friends? Yup. Distant Pagan friends? Yup. Drums corps folk? Check.
When I first joined, I joined a music composition group and posted a few messages. The owner of the group made me an officer (as one of the few trained musicians willing to offer up info) and sent his network to friend me. I've removed most of them. Though it was nice to get tidbits of living from around the world, I'd rather have had more interaction with those folk.
I don't post the highly personal stuff on Facebook. I blog that on Tribe and LiveJournal, where my friends lists are quite small. I post about anything I want on my blog, as nobody who can read it has any problem with Pagans or poly folk or drum corps nuts or the nature of my photo work or anything else.
